TODAY’S CONDITION

This film documents the work of Nargis Latif, who is the head of Gul Bahao, a Karachi based NGO working towards the vision of recycling and compressing plastic waste into modular blocks that can be used to build weather resistant, cheap and highly flexible housing. The film highlights some fascinating achievements of this continuous process and was produced by a group of young students as part of ‘FUTURE (T)HERE – a youth conference on sustainable living’ at the Goethe-Institute Karachi, Pakistan.

Amongst other art forms, the conference resulted in two films, that are piloting ‘UmWelten’ our participatory video project on the environment that Glocal developed in collaboration with a number of Goethe-Institutes worldwide.

In each participating country, a group of young German leaners produces two films on environmental issues that are specific to that particular region. A first film focuses on a broader investigation of environmental issues, whereas a second film documents a good practice example. Through their films, the students are able to speak to experts and explore potential reasons and risks of environmental pollution and identify the barriers to reverse the effects. The project aims to raise awareness and to motivate positive activism. All films will be available through an online film library and will serve as a teaching tool for teachers worldwide. Our participants will use the films to raise awareness amongst their peers. As environmental embassadors, they will host film screenings with Q&As infront of their class, school, friends and families.

In 2019, the project will travel to Uganda, Kenya, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Indonesia and Australia.
